Leave for Change®

Canadian professionals will now have a chance to put their technical and creative skills towards helping development project overseas through Uniterra’s Leave for Change® program.

Leave for Change® is a corporate volunteering initiative that enables employees from participating organizations to transform part of their annual leave into a three to four week volunteer assignment in a developing country.

Employers also support the participation of their employees and cover a part of the costs through a fee per assignment.

Uniterra Volunteer Program

Issues such as poverty, poor health, inequality and economic development are still prevalent in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Uniterra program offers individuals and organizations the opportunity to make a difference in 13 developing countries and in Canada. 

Uniterra gives Canadians the means to take concrete action and to make a real difference by applying their skills and experience.

International Student Management

Strong leaders are required to contribute to the development of a country. Each year, a handful of bright and talented Batswana students are given a unique opportunity to pursue their education in a Canadian university or college. The goal is to develop specific skills that will enable them to secure jobs in the public and private sectors in Botswana and contribute to the country’s development. Living and studying in Canada can provide these students with a wealth of knowledge and new experiences to bring back to their home country.

Results: 
  • 1500+ Students from Botswana have come to Canada to pursue undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate studies since 1981
  • 25+ Universities and colleges across Canada have welcomed these international students
  • 92% Of graduates return to their home country to work and contribute to the development
  • Major fields of study include engineering, telecommunications, geometrics, food science, agriculture, geochemistry, economics and geophysics
Homestay Host: 

Become a Homestay Host and extend a warm welcome to international students! You can assist students from developing countries who are coming to study at Canadian universities or colleges. Help them adjust to living in Canada as a WUSC Homestay Host. Find out more!

 

 

WUSC's Botswana Student Programs under International Student Management are fully funded by the Government of Botswana and partnered with the Botswana Ministry of Education and Botswana’s Department of Local Government Service Management. WUSC’s International Student Management division also receives funding from Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for the Local Leadership for Development Project in partnership with Cowater International.

Students Without Borders™

In an increasingly connected world, it is becoming vital for Canadian university and college students from various faculties to apply and share their knowledge and skills globally. Through SWB, students are provided with an internship opportunity to work and contribute to development projects with WUSC’s local partner organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Based on a “needs driven” approach, both the student and the local partner organization benefit from such an experience.

Results: 
  • 55+ Canadian university and colleges had their students participate in SWB
  • 600+ Students have been placed for overseas placements in
  • 13 Countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America working in
  • 15+ Different sectors of work. including agriculture, communications, health and information technology

How to Apply
You must submit the following documents to swb@wusc.ca:

  • a copy of your résumé
  • letter of intent outlining why you are applying for a particular placement
  • three reference letters (including two academic)
  • a list of no more than three (3) placements to which you wish to apply.

If you are applying for more than one placement, please indicate an order of preference in your letter of intent.


Any current or recently graduated student from a Canadian university or college is eligible to apply for a SWB placement.

Student Refugee Program

Whether through war or political repression, young men and women are often forced to flee their home country, only to face the harsh conditions of life in a refugee camp. Opportunities for higher education are virtually non-existent, leaving many bright and talented students unable to achieve their academic goals.

  • 33 Years the Student Refugee Program has been helping young men and women in refugee camps resettle in Canada to attend university and college
  • 61 Universities and colleges welcome sponsored students on their campus
  • 1100+ Students have been sponsored since 1978
  • 2.5 Million dollars are raised and/or leveraged by Canadian students every year in support of the SRP
  • 750,000+ Canadians are more aware of refugee and immigrant issues resulting from the actions of engaged students

National Research Seminar: Call for proposals!

WUSC is pleased to launch this year's National Research Seminar and to celebrate its first decade. Inaugurated by John Ralston Saul in 2003, the National Research Seminar explores a particular challenge in international development and provides a tremendous platform for emerging scholars to share their research findings with university and college students, faculty members, practitioners and policy makers from across Canada and the world.

We've arrived!!! We are waiting sleepily in the Istanbul airport arrivals lounge. Our colleagues from Sri Lanka are due to arrive shortly from the other side of the world. We're keen to see them!

Our flight from Ottawa to Istanbul was smooth and we met a couple of other AWID Forum participants along the way. Talking with them in the passport control line got us even more excited for the conference to start.

Refugee Rights Day: Support the Student Refugee Program

For millions of student refugees, opportunity for higher education and a better life is only a dream. An estimated 15 million people are uprooted from their homes and forced to live in UNHCR refugee camps. It’s only supposed to be a temporary situation, but many end up living there for decades with limited access to mobility, work and education.
