Students Without Borders™

Learning Beyond the Canadian Classroom

In an increasingly connected world, it is becoming vital for Canadian university and college students from various faculties to apply and share their knowledge and skills globally. Through SWB, students are provided with an internship opportunity to work and contribute to development projects with WUSC’s local partner organizations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Based on a “needs driven” approach, both the student and the local partner organization benefit from such an experience.

What We're Doing:

SWB is a partner driven program where qualified students spend a semester or more in Africa, Asia or Latin America to:

  • work with WUSC’s local partners in their area of expertise;
  • gain a better understanding of global issues and perspectives;
  • potentially gain academic credits after successful completion of their placement;
  • share knowledge and learn from first hand experience.

Visit the SWB Blog for a first-hand perspective from former and current SWB volunteers!
What We're Learning:

Meeting local needs: WUSC works closely with the local partner organization to develop job descriptions that are relevant to the local need and students’ academic interest. These tailored job descriptions help to ensure the right person is in place, to build the capacity of the local partner organization and will give the student relevant work experience.

Working in partnership: WUSC recognizes the value of partnership and has been working closely with Canadians universities and colleges to establish agreements. These agreements increase the commitment of the institutions towards the student volunteers and improve the overall experience of the students.

Support to Students: The average cost of an SWB placement is over $6000, which can be a financial burden for post-secondary students. These costs ensure students are well supported throughout their placement from pre-departure guidance to in-field orientation and monitoring. WUSC provides fundraising strategies and tips to help alleviate costs.

History:

SWB began as a pilot project in 2005 with four students from Trent University that were placed in Botswana. Since then, the program has quickly expanded and we are now placing students in 13 countries! On average, SWB places 150 volunteers overseas per year.
