Every year, the WUSC Campus Engagement team works with Local Committees across Canada to organize and facilitate a series of day-long Regional Meeting trainings. We are very excited to report back that over the course of this Fall 2014 semester, Regional Meetings were held in Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax, as well as one student-led training in Winnipeg. These training created spaces for training, reflection, best practice sharing, and fun for over 80 student-members!
This year’s Toronto Regional Meeting was another resounding success! On September 21st, 31 participants from 16 different Local Committees in Ontario were in attendance, and each brought with them a diversity of opinion and ideas, infectious enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn and share. Participants walked away with a stronger understanding of WUSC, numerous new event ideas and new connections in the Southern Ontario area. Overall, it was a terrific start to what is becoming a highly active and successful year for Ontario Local Committees!
It has been a few years since a WUSC-led Regional Meeting in BC, so we were very excited to hold our 2nd Regional Meeting of the year in Vancouver. The Vancouver Regional Meeting was held on September 27th and hosted by the amazing University of British Columbia (UBC) Local Committee. It was wonderful to bring together 22 participants from 5 Local Committees across British Columbia, especially those who made the short trek from Burnaby (Simon Fraser University), the long trek from Vancouver Island (Royal Roads, University of Victoria, and Vancouver Island University), and the VERY LONG journey from Prince George (University of Northern British Columbia).
On November 1st, the last WUSC-organized Halifax Regional Meeting contributed to foster all the passion and motivation of our East Coast Local Committee members! 14 participants from 6 different Local Committees shared their expertise, tips, and best practices while learning more about WUSC, Uniterra and the SRP. Because we were a small group, the Regional Meeting became a comfortable space to connect. This enabled partnership opportunities between Local Committees and we are excited to see the results to come. Also, a huge thank you to St. Mary University Local Committee who hosted the event!
Last but not least, the University of Manitoba Local Committee took the lead in organizing the first student-member-organized Manitoba sub-Regional Meeting. In total, 16 participants from 4 Local Committees attended the meeting. Some highlights of the day included a session about overseas opportunities led by former Uniterra Students Without Borders® and International Seminar participants; brainstorming about recruitment and continuity; and planning next steps for future collaboration in the region!
In total, this year’s Regional meetings engaged 84 participants from 31 Local Committees! You can take a look at some pictures of our Regional Meetings on our Facebook page! Thanks for your participation and enthusiasm to everyone who participated. We look forward to seeing some of you again at the WUSC and CECI International Forum in January 2015 for the next round of training!
