Certifying Teachers in Afghanistan

Following decades of conflict and tumult, almost half of Afghanistan's children are still not attending schools. Despite an increase of teachers since 2001, only 24% of teachers have the minimum qualifications to teach. The country lacks common and appropriate standards for certifying teachers and accrediting teacher training institutions. Consequently, the quality of education in Afghanistan is poor.

  • Improve the standards of teacher training institutions and quality of existing teachers within the education system
  • Enhance quality of classroom teaching
  • Increase equity in the delivery of education services across Afghanistan
  • Contribute to greater access to education for boys and girls
  • Increase primary completion percentage and secondary school enrolment

Women Defining Peace in Sri Lanka

Violence against women is a way for some men to exert and maintain power in the home and community and is a widespread problem in Sri Lanka and around the world. Women and men have to work together to address issues of gender based violence. Women have to take the lead in promoting peace and development that benefits both sexes equally.

Results: 
  • More collaboration between Sri Lankan organizations in addressing gender based violence and women’s rights issues
  • 17 local organizations offering better services to prevent and reduce violence against women
  • 5 media and communication companies are now actively engaged in public activities to prevent gender based violence
  • Greater engagement by government officials (1,100 officers, 25 lawyers, 40 teachers, 1,300 police officers, etc.) to provide better services to victims of gender based violence

Plantation Communities Project in Sri Lanka

For Sri Lanka’s 300,000 Tamil tea pluckers and plantation workers, empowerment means much more than merely changing laws.  It means improving their daily living and working conditions. It means ensuring that they know their rights as Sri Lankan citizens. Most of all it means giving them the opportunities to shape their own futures.

Results: 
  • 10,000 Plantation residents have successfully navigated the complicated process of obtaining basic identity documents
  • Over 80 women's groups have received training to help them plan and implement community initiatives on gender inequality, violence against women, and access to health services and clean water
  • Hundreds of local youth have completed vocational training and secured good jobs working in the local welding, construction, hotel and garment industries
  • A number of plantations are promoting women to supervisory roles as a result of the training and activities under taken by the project
  • Rates of domestic violence have gone down while rates of participation in child care and household activities by men and boys have gone up

National Research Seminar: Call for proposals!

WUSC is pleased to launch this year's National Research Seminar and to celebrate its first decade. Inaugurated by John Ralston Saul in 2003, the National Research Seminar explores a particular challenge in international development and provides a tremendous platform for emerging scholars to share their research findings with university and college students, faculty members, practitioners and policy makers from across Canada and the world.

We've arrived!!! We are waiting sleepily in the Istanbul airport arrivals lounge. Our colleagues from Sri Lanka are due to arrive shortly from the other side of the world. We're keen to see them!

Our flight from Ottawa to Istanbul was smooth and we met a couple of other AWID Forum participants along the way. Talking with them in the passport control line got us even more excited for the conference to start.
