Whether through war or political repression, young men and women are often forced to flee their home country, only to face the harsh conditions of life in a refugee camp. Opportunities for higher education are virtually non-existent, leaving many bright and talented students unable to achieve their academic goals.

Life as a Refugee

Awuol’s memory of fleeing South Sudan is a bit unclear as he was a young boy of 8 or 9 at the time.  He does recall being quite fortunate as his family, (Awuol, his mother and two sisters,) travelled by truck from South Sudan to Kenya.  Many others made that long trek on foot.  At the time, one brother had been killed in the war and his two older brothers stayed behind as soldiers.

Refugee Rights Day: Support the Student Refugee Program

For millions of student refugees, opportunity for higher education and a better life is only a dream. An estimated 15 million people are uprooted from their homes and forced to live in UNHCR refugee camps. It’s only supposed to be a temporary situation, but many end up living there for decades with limited access to mobility, work and education.

Making Refugee Education a Top Priority

Refugees, who complete secondary and post-secondary education, become valuable contributors to their community and country. Yet access to higher education continues to be limited and uneven across all regions in the Eastern and Horn of Africa.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) recently released a study stressing the importance of providing refugees with proper, quality education.
