Assignment Context

As the Business Management Advisor for RefuSHE’s Artisan Collective you will support with strategy development, operational improvement, and production management expertise. You will provide a strategic roadmap/plan for the Collective’s growth over the next few years. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting a SWOT analysis of the Collective, assessing its operations and workflows, and developing a detailed business plan with strategies to increase production capacity, enhance supply chain efficiencies, and enhance capacity of the Collective staff with the aim of building a team with a strong business acumen.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Create a strategic roadmap/plan defining the pathways and milestones (short, medium, and long-term) towards growth for the Collective and include opportunity and risk considerations across operations, supply chain, production, sales, staffing, and policies. Ensure strategic plan components reflect the social mission of the Artisan Collective and consider the vulnerability of the target work force (refugee young women)
  • Support the creation of structures and systems for a smooth, predictable, and efficient production, e.g. production delivery/lead time schedules and continually assess production capacity against incoming orders with the entire team 
  • Improve inventory management processes to minimize stock-outs and loss during production and storage. Enhance efficiencies in the reorder process to avoid over or under-purchasing to minimize stock holding costs.
  • Conduct a thorough operations assessment to identify inefficiencies and develop and implement revised procedures to improve efficiencies across the Collective while maintaining compliance within larger organization. As part of operations assessment, identify bottlenecks in operations and work across functions and with the Collective team to collectively identify long-lasting cost effective and eco conscious solutions to these
  • Enhance systems for tracking, reporting, analyzing and forecasting operational functions
  • In liaison with the Collective staff, develop a high performing, reliable and diverse supplier base that can meet the needs of production and customer demand
  • Undertake public engagement and fundraising activities before, during, and after their volunteer assignment. You will be equipped with tools, training, and support to achieve these goals 
  • Ensure that a gender equality lens is consistently applied in the execution of all activities
  • Support partners to empower young women and promote a culture of gender sensitive representation in all activities and program benefits.  
  • Submit reports as required by the partner organization and by WUSC.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Five years demonstrable experience in business management, management consulting, strategic management of commercial or social enterprises, and/or business operations
  • Experience in financial management required 
  • Experience in change management and operational process improvement
  • Ability to lead, inspire, and develop a commercial centric culture while being sensitive to the social mission and vulnerability of refugee young women
  • Creative thinking, strong problem-solving skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Self-starter, highly driven, and capable of executing on responsibilities with minimal oversight and follow-up of management is essential
  • Understanding of social enterprises and the social business sector 
  • Experience in manufacturing considering an asset 
  • Experience in change management and operational process improvement an asset
  • A commitment to gender equality, youth inclusion, and international volunteering
  • Flexibility, adaptability, resilience, self-awareness, confidence, ability to work well in a team, interpersonal skills, communication skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Written and oral fluency in English.

Project Description

Volunteering for development is one of the important ways in which WUSC pursues its mission. The IGNI+E project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, supports over 70 partner organizations to advance gender equality and the economic empowerment of 1.2 million youth around the world. IGNI+E harnesses the knowledge, capacity and expertise of skilled Canadians through volunteer assignments and public engagement activities to assist partners in improving their performance, advocating for gender equality, and implementing more sustainable, innovative and inclusive initiatives and services for poor and marginalised youth, particularly young women. Overseas, our volunteers collaborate with a wide variety of partners, including enterprise and social enterprise development incubators, skills training centres, women's organizations, and youth groups. In Canada, WUSC works with institutions and individuals to identify, prepare, and support volunteers who travel overseas to support our partners. Our network in Canada also works with WUSC to raise awareness among Canadians to inspire greater action on global development issues. Our collective focus is on sustainable and inclusive changes to create a better world for youth.

Partner Description

RefuSHE works to protect, educate, and empower orphaned, unaccompanied, and separated refugee girls and young women to build healthier and more resilient futures for themselves and their children. RefuSHE provides a holistic model of services to orphaned and separated refugee girls including education and economic opportunities, case management, a safe house, community outreach and advocacy and research.

Support Package

  • Support and guidance from the WUSC Volunteer Mobilization Team prior to departure and from WUSC Country Team while on assignment
  • Participation in a pre-departure training where you will have the opportunity to learn about the program, gain practical skills for living and working in an intercultural context and meet other volunteers
  • Travel, meals and accommodation are covered during in-person pre-departure
  • In-country orientation upon arrival in country of assignment
  • Language training in country of assignment, where required
  • Airfare to and from country of assignment
  • Support from the WUSC Administrative Officer for all relevant visas and work permits
  • Cost of required country specific vaccinations and antimalarials

Départs internationaux

L'EUMC a repris la planification et le recrutement pour les affectations de volontariat à l'international pour des départs à partir novembre 2021, au plus tôt. Cependant, le contexte mondial actuel continue d’évoluer et, comme nous continuons à surveiller de près les informations et les directives internationales, nationales et locales en matière de santé, nos plans et nos échéanciers sont susceptibles d’être modifiés. La santé et la sécurité de nos partenaires et de nos volontaires sont notre priorité absolue et, à ce titre, nous avons entrepris un processus rigoureux de planification de la reprise du volontariat international. Un certain nombre de conditions auront besoin d’être remplies avant qu’une affectation ne reçoive le feu vert, notamment la levée des restrictions canadiennes sur les voyages non essentiels. Toutes les personnes qui envisagent de devenir volontaires à l’étranger avec l’EUMC doivent se préparer à faire preuve d’ouverture d’esprit, de flexibilité et accepter de remplir les conditions suivantes :

  • Les volontaires doivent être entièrement vacciné.e.s (deux doses de vaccin) contre la COVID-19 et être en mesure de fournir la preuve de leur vaccination.
  • Les volontaires doivent respecter les exigences du gouvernement canadien et du pays d’affectation et des compagnies aériennes en ce qui concerne les tests PCR.
  • Les volontaires doivent accepter de suivre toutes les directives d’atténuation et gestes barrières de la COVID-19 émises par le gouvernement canadien, l’EUMC et les autorités locales du pays d’affectation.
