Remembering Norma E. Walmsley (1921 – 2011)

Photo of Norma WalmsleyWUSC is saddened to hear about the passing of Norma Walmsley, an alumnus who did so much for international development and women’s equality.

Norma’s connection with WUSC began when she was a student, joining the Local Committee at McGill University. After graduation, she became a professor of Political Science at Brandon University and formed the Local Committee at the school.

Norma remained closely involved with WUSC throughout the years, becoming a member of the Board of Directors. In 1987, she received the Lewis Perinbam Award for International Development.

She was the founder of MATCH International, and has been honoured numerous times for her work in international development and in the Ottawa Community. Notable accolades include, Officer of the Order of Canada, LLD Brandon University and Carleton University, Governor General’s Persons Award, Queen Elizabeth Silver and Gold Jubilee Medals; honorary life member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, Ottawa-Gatineau Society for International Development.
