Young Leaders Reimagine the Future of Sri Lankan Crafts
This summer, 24 young people from Canada and Sri Lanka came together for the 2025 International Seminar—an immersive learning experience that combined cross-cultural exchange, systems thinking, and real-world research in Sri Lanka’s craft sector. Together, they explored how to make local crafts more competitive in global markets, while preserving their rich cultural integrity.
Building Skills, Finding Purpose, and Fostering Global Connections
For Jeremy, one of the Canadian participants, the Seminar was a chance to learn directly from artisans and gain new perspectives on equity and sustainability in the craft industry. He visited craft villages and organizations, observed production processes, and spoke with artisans about the challenges they face.
“Those conversations left a lasting impact on me, and shaped the way I viewed issues of equity within craft industries,” he shares.
A key part of his experience was working alongside Sri Lankan peers to overcome language barriers during interviews. This collaboration helped him better understand the sector while strengthening cross-cultural friendships.
“It was an incredible opportunity to contribute to positive global impact while collaborating across cultures and engaging in meaningful cultural exchange,” he explains.
One of the highlights for him was the community of peers he connected with during the Seminar. He plans to bring the perspectives he gained into his future studies, work, and life.
Jeremy also has advice for future Seminarists: “It is ok not to understand everything at first, what matters is that you try. The experience truly is special, and your fellow Seminarists are amazing people to bond with and support you.”
Learning Through Experience
Madeleine, another Canadian Seminarist, joined after being encouraged by a family member who had participated the year before in Malawi. For her, the Seminar was an opportunity to strengthen research and teamwork skills while navigating cultural differences in a supportive environment. “The Seminar taught me important skills in effective teamwork and leadership,” she explains. “I learned about how to navigate cultural differences, and most importantly, how to build strong relationships upon the similarities within us all.”
The friendships formed during the Seminar were one of the most meaningful aspects for Madeleine.
“This experience allowed us to engage in cross-cultural exchange in a much more profound way, as we turned from strangers to truly close friends. I hope to remain connected with all these wonderful people as we grow professionally and continue to support one another over the years ahead.” Through the International Seminar, participants join a network of professionals across various sectors equipped to tackle issues in their communities.
Why Youth Engagement Matters
Both Jeremy and Madeleine emphasized how important it is for young people to be part of the global development sector.
“I believe youth should be engaged in this sector because that is where awareness and change begin. Knowledge is power, and when young people stay informed about global issues, they can share that understanding within their circles and help shape a more conscious future,” Jeremy says.
Madeleine also encourages other youth to take part: “I think this experience is a great opportunity for any young person looking to push their thinking, develop skills, and be exposed to new cultures and knowledge.”
A Growing Community of Changemakers
Each year, the International Seminar brings together young leaders who leave not only with research outcomes, but with lasting skills, friendships, and a shared commitment to global citizenship.
