Remembering Charles Thon Madoi (1993-2018)
WUSC is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of former Student Refugee Program (SRP) student, Charles Thon Madoi. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends in Kenya, South Sudan, and Canada during this difficult time.
Originally from South Sudan, Charles and his family moved to Kenya to live in the Kakuma Refugee Camp when he was seven years old. He was an excellent student throughout his life and was determined to create a better future for himself and his family. It was important to Charles to enter a profession that was needed in his country, so he could give back to his community as well.
Charles arrived in Canada in 2014 to study Business Administration and Computer Science at Trent University. Actively involved in his local committee, Charles made many important contributions to improving the experiences of newly arriving SRP students on his campus over the past few years. He is remembered by his peers for being sociable, humble, and a great friend.
Under these very difficult circumstances, the SRP community at Trent has shown incredible strength in supporting their friend Charles over the last few weeks of his life. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of you.
Charles’ family in South Sudan and would like him to return home so he can be laid to rest there. Funds are being collected to cover the costs associated with this process. If you would like to contribute you can donate here.
We invite you to share in the memory of Charles as a compassionate and committed member of the WUSC network.
