Assignment Context

Are you passionate about creating an inclusive environment for community empowerment to support peace and development at the grassroots level for refugees and other displaced people in Uganda? Do you have Human Resource skills to share? 

As the Human Resource Advisor with the Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT), you will support the organization to review, improve and implement the human resource strategy. In this role, you will conduct an audit of the existing human resources system and policies, and make recommendations on strengthening organizational systems to enhance staff recruitment, growth, retention and transition.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT) to review existing human resource systems and assist in implementing its strategic plan 
  • In collaboration with Human Resources department, review current management policies, processes and practices and advise on potential improvements
  • Develop relevant human resources tools and templates for effective personnel management
  • Support performance management by assisting with the development and implementation of performance appraisal systems, providing training on performance management, and supporting managers with employee feedback and coaching
  • Share best practices related to increasing staff morale and motivation 
  • Use an intersectional lens to ensure the inclusion and participation of young women and other marginalized youth, as well as their representation, in all activities related to communications
  • Ensure that an environmental sustainability lens is consistently applied in the execution of all assignment activities 
  • Participate in pre-assignment training
  • Participate in at least 3 public engagement initiatives before, during, or after the assignment. Volunteers will be equipped with the tools, training, and support to achieve these goals. Volunteers will also have one virtual check-in with the Public Engagement Officer throughout the course of their assignment.
  • Ensure that a gender equality lens is consistently applied in the execution of all activities.
  • Support partners to empower young women and promote a culture of gender sensitive representation in all activities and program benefits.
  • Submit reports as required by the partner organization and by WUSC.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree and/or training in human resources or other related field
  • Demonstrated experience in human resource management
  • Experience in conducting human resources reviews and audits
  • Experience in capacity building on staff motivation, growth, retention and transition 
  • A commitment to gender equality, youth inclusion, and international volunteering
  • Flexibility, adaptability, excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Experience with group facilitation and trainings, including content development considered an asset
  • Experience living and working internationally considered an asset
  • Written and oral fluency in English.

Project Description

Volunteering for development is one of the important ways in which WUSC pursues its mission. The IGNI+E project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, supports over 70 partner organizations to advance gender equality and the economic empowerment of 1.2 million youth around the world. IGNI+E harnesses the knowledge, capacity and expertise of skilled Canadians through volunteer assignments and public engagement activities to assist partners in improving their performance, advocating for gender equality, and implementing more sustainable, innovative and inclusive initiatives and services for poor and marginalised youth, particularly young women. Overseas, our volunteers collaborate with a wide variety of partners, including enterprise and social enterprise development incubators, skills training centres, women’s organizations, and youth groups. In Canada, WUSC works with institutions and individuals to identify, prepare, and support volunteers who travel overseas to support our partners. Our network in Canada also works with WUSC to raise awareness among Canadians to inspire greater action on global development issues. Our collective focus is on sustainable and inclusive changes to create a better world for youth.

Partner Description

Youth Social Advocacy Team is a Refugee Youth-Led Non-Governmental Organization That Works to Address the Increasing Culture of Violence by Creating an Inclusive Environment for Community Empowerment Through Skills Development, Conflict Transformation, livelihood, Basic Adult Literacy, Social Innovations, That Promotes Peaceful Coexistence, Livelihoods and Education for Self-Reliance to Support Peace and Development at The Grassroots Level. YSAT Founded in June 2016, YSAT was first registered in 2017 with ADLG/DCS Reg. 503/360 with Head Office in Ocea Village, Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement West Nile Region. YSAT was registered as National NGO Reg No. INDR152704213NB Operational Permit No. INDP0004213NBYouth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT Uganda) implement its projects through 3 programmes, working in partnership with existing community-based structures, including Local Leadership, Sub County and District Local Development/Community Services departments, community-based organizations, Youth Networks, Office of Prime Minister, Humanitarian & Development Partners. The 3 programmes are; Peaceful Coexistence (Conflict transformation, community dialogue, exchange programme, Livelihood (L, GFA, Entrepreneurship, skills development, social innovation Education In Emergency (Basic education, numeracy & literacy, both formal and informal) and our targets beneficiaries are as follows (15-35) youths both female and males, PSNS- Livelihood, Community leaders (RWCs, LCs), Men, Women, Adolescents (boys and girls) out of school.
