Assignment Context

Are you passionate about supporting durable solutions for refugees? Do you have resource mobilization skills to share? 

As the Resource Mobilization Advisor with Tumaini Letu in Lilongwe, Malawi , you will support the organization in conducting donor mapping and developing a resource mobilization strategy to secure funds for ongoing operations. In this role, will also support the development of funding proposals, concepts and partnership development.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with staff to identify a diverse portfolio of funding opportunities by conducting intensive donor mapping
  • In collaboration with staff respond to funding calls, develop proposals and concept papers
  • Identify resource mobilization opportunities using different platforms including digital and provide guidance on establishing and maintaining strong partnerships with donors applying online tools
  • Support in updating resource mobilization strategy and work plan with specific time frames
  • Conduct training to increase staff capacity in resource mobilization strategy implementation and the use of monitoring and evaluation tools to monitor the outcomes of the strategy 
  • Collaborate with the partner to ensure that youth, particularly young women and marginalized youth, are included in any capacity strengthening activities focusing on program development and resource mobilization
  • Ensure an Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action  lens is applied when defining the services and programs
  • Participate in pre-assignment training
  • Participate in at least 3 public engagement initiatives before, during, or after the assignment. Volunteers will be equipped with the tools, training, and support to achieve these goals. Volunteers will also have one virtual check-in with the Public Engagement Officer throughout the course of their assignment
  • Set up a personalized volunteer fundraising page on the WUSC fundraising platform and share it in your networks. Volunteers will be supported with the tools, training and support to achieve the fundraising goal
  • Submit reports as required by the partner organization and by WUSC.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Degree In Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in developing institutional partnerships
  • Experience with fundraising and resource mobilization in the not-for-profit sector
  • Minimum two (2) years relevant professional experience in your field of expertise
  • A commitment to gender equality, youth inclusion, and international volunteering
  • Flexibility, adaptability, excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Experience with group facilitation and trainings, including content development considered an asset
  • Experience living and working internationally considered an asset.
  • Written and oral fluency in English.

Project Description

Volunteering for development is one of the important ways in which WUSC pursues its mission. The IGNI+E project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, supports over 70 partner organizations to advance gender equality and the economic empowerment of 1.2 million youth around the world. IGNI+E harnesses the knowledge, capacity and expertise of skilled Canadians through volunteer assignments and public engagement activities to assist partners in improving their performance, advocating for gender equality, and implementing more sustainable, innovative and inclusive initiatives and services for poor and marginalised youth, particularly young women. Overseas, our volunteers collaborate with a wide variety of partners, including enterprise and social enterprise development incubators, skills training centres, women's organizations, and youth groups. In Canada, WUSC works with institutions and individuals to identify, prepare, and support volunteers who travel overseas to support our partners. Our network in Canada also works with WUSC to raise awareness among Canadians to inspire greater action on global development issues. Our collective focus is on sustainable and inclusive changes to create a better world for youth.

Partner Description

Tumaini Letu (Swahili for “Our Hope”) is a non-profit organization based within the Dzaleka Refugee Camp inMalawi. Tumaini Letu exists to promote the social, cultural, and economic inclusion of refugees in Malawithrough different programs such as refugee rights advocacy, youth engagement and behavior change,community-based tourism, and entrepreneurship and job creation.Tumaini Letu’s flagship project is the annual Tumaini Festival, which transforms Dzaleka Refugee Camp intoa tourist destination attracting tens of thousands of domestic and international tourists. Tumaini Festivalpromotes cultural exchange and economic empowerment for refugees through the world’s first internationalfestival held in a refugee camp. The festival creates opportunities for people from different culturalbackgrounds to learn from each other and celebrate humanity by appreciating each other’s differences.Tumaini is not just a festival; it is a movement that raises the voices of refugees, creates a conversation, andtransforms the host community into active advocates for the refugee cause. The festival also boosts economicactivities within the camp and offers a platform for the refugee community to sell their goods and services,which improves their standard of living.

  • Support and guidance from the WUSC Volunteer Mobilization Team prior to departure and from WUSC Country Team while on assignment
