Market System Development Training

WUSC and MarketShare Associates are proud to present one of Canada’s first Market System Development (MSD) training. The concepts from MSD are increasingly demanded by donors and implemented in development programs worldwide. Pioneered by the the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC), the approach has grown and adapted to provide results from small island states to conflict economies, from economic growth projects to the health sector, while grappling with the integration of women and the complexity of results measurement.

The five-day course will include an in-depth introduction to MSD concepts, a focus on monitoring for performance enhancement for MSD projects and a day on women’s economic empowerment in an MSD context. Trainers are international practitioners and subject matter experts while boasting a track-record of contribution to the field of MSD.

The course will be held in Ottawa at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, October 16th to October 20th, 2017.

Cost: The week-long training fee is $1250 (CAD) which includes breakfast and lunch on every training day.

Trainer Profiles

Marshall Bear: Mr. Marshall Bear co-designed and delivered the core skills curriculum for the Springfield Centre’s Making Markets Work training program from its inception in 2000 through 2012.  He has designed and delivered customized courses for market system development implementers, including DAI in Ethiopia (PEPE project) and Bangladesh (AVC project), Coffey International in Nigeria (GEMS4), Adam Smith International in Kenya (KMT), and TechnoServe in East Africa.  Mr. Bear is currently co-authoring a case study on Australian DFAT’s Market Development Facility making the case for donors and implementers to acknowledge market messiness and why it matters for methodology, program design, management, and results expectations. Mr. Bear is an independent consultant with extensive experience in the design, backstopping and evaluation of market system development programs for inclusive growth.  

Sarah Harrison: Sarah Harrison is a Gender Equality Specialist with a long-standing commitment to sustainable economic development, specializing in gender equality, women’s economic empowerment and monitoring & evaluation. Her background includes education, work and travel in over 50 countries across six continents. Sarah has extensive experience mainstreaming gender across organizations, enterprises and projects to ensure more equitable outcomes. Sarah has worked closely with and consulted for a range of institutions.  Sarah has a diverse skill set with a dynamic career history. Her former roles have ranged from youth livelihood development in South East Asia to impact assessment throughout Africa to managing her own development consultancy practice. Sarah holds a Masters of Development Economics from Dalhousie University and an Honours Baccalaureate in Computing and Information Science from Guelph University. She is also certified in Gender Equality.

Ben Fowler: Ben Fowler is a co-founder and Principal Consultant at MarketShare Associates, a consulting firm focused on implementing and measuring innovative economic development approaches.  Ben leads MSA’s results measurement and adaptive management practice area and specializes in measurement and evaluation of public and private investments.  He has written a number of papers and guidance documents on results measurement for USAID, the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development, the BEAM Exchange and others.  Ben has 15 years of experience in economic development across more than 30 countries, including long-term roles in Kenya and Guatemala.  He previously worked for MEDA and the Aga Khan Foundation.  Ben speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Kiswahili.

Ariane Ryan: Ariane Ryan has over a decade of experience working in complex international development environments. She started her career in business development services in Africa and, after acquiring private sector marketing experience, has been focusing her work in value chain market systems and MSD programs. Ariane has managed large scale Women’s Economic Empowerment programs in Pakistan, Libya and Ghana. Over the last few years, Ariane has been working as a market systems and WEE advisor for programs in Africa and Asia including the Tanzania Agriculture Market Development Trust, the multi-country Market Development Facility and the Cambodia Agricultural Value Chain program. Ariane is the Inclusive Economies Advisor for WUSC and is based in Ottawa.
