Programming transformations for greater impact on the lives of young people

The majority of young people live in regions that are disproportionately affected by challenges stemming from conflict, displacement, climate change, and rising inflation.

The rapidly evolving nature of these global challenges remind us of the constant need for adaptation to ensure our work continues to meet the greatest needs of young people around the world. One of the ways we achieve this is by applying a systems thinking and harnessing emerging and promising innovations that challenge the status quo and improve the lives of youth.

This programming approach depends greatly on the many contributions of our global network of partners. Through partnerships with a wide range of actors, including non-profit organizations, local civil society organizations, government institutions, education institutions, and the private sector, we aim to equip young people with the resources and skills they need to create a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Here are some examples of the way we have adapted our programming this past year to respond to the changing global contexts in which we work:

  1. Increasing support for students on the foundations of learning—including literacy, numeracy, and social skills—and providing more holistic support for students and teachers, including mental health support in response to the post-pandemic learning crisis.
  2. Enhancing partnerships with employers and training institutions to facilitate students’ transition from training to employment, especially for women and youth, in response to increasing financial instability globally.
  3. Supporting Canada’s leadership on complementary pathways to resettlement for refugees, in response to the largest levels of population displacement and forced migration ever recorded.
  4. Deepening our engagement with partners on the important role of social norms, including piloting new strategies to promote men and boys’ involvement in addressing gender barriers to education and economic opportunities.

Learn about the ways these adaptations are being realized through our programming and the impact it’s having on education, economic, and empowerment opportunities for young people in our Annual Report.
