Universities and Colleges play an important role in providing sound academic expertise in development initiatives. With our ability to link Canada’s universities and colleges to our work in international development and cooperation, WUSC has been leveraging this expertise for over 60 years.
More than 40 post-secondary institutions across Canada - including universities, community colleges and CEGEPs - are members of WUSC, contributing valuable insight in our policies, vision and programs.
We share the belief that education changes the world and, WUSC members, universities and colleges give students, staff and faculty access to our growing roster of programs and activities in Canada and the developing world. These include:
- engaging students on more than 80 university and college across Canada and providing them with hands-on experiences to connect with global issues through the Student Refugee Program, International Local Committee Network, Students Without Borders™ and our annual International Seminar;
- diversifying and internationalizing campuses by bringing students from the South to Canada through our International Student Management;
- providing staff and faculty with an opportunity to guide and support WUSC’s student-led Student Refugee Program;
- providing a bridge between theory and practice through the WUSC International Forum and National Research Seminar;
- providing staff and faculty with professional development opportunities through Leave for Change®;

Strong leaders are required to contribute to the development of a country. Each year, a handful of bright and talented Batswana students are given a unique opportunity to pursue their education in a Canadian university or college. The goal is to develop specific skills that will enable them to secure jobs in the public and private sectors in Botswana and contribute to the country’s development. Living and studying in Canada can provide these students with a wealth of knowledge and new experiences to bring back to their home country.
Results:
- 1500+ Students from Botswana have come to Canada to pursue undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate studies since 1981
- 25+ Universities and colleges across Canada have welcomed these international students
- 92% Of graduates return to their home country to work and contribute to the development
- Major fields of study include engineering, telecommunications, geometrics, food science, agriculture, geochemistry, economics and geophysics

WUSC's Botswana Student Programs under International Student Management are fully funded by the Government of Botswana and partnered with the Botswana Ministry of Education and Botswana’s Department of Local Government Service Management. WUSC’s International Student Management division also receives funding from Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for the Local Leadership for Development Project in partnership with Cowater International.
WUSC is pleased to launch this year's National Research Seminar and to celebrate its first decade. Inaugurated by John Ralston Saul in 2003, the National Research Seminar explores a particular challenge in international development and provides a tremendous platform for emerging scholars to share their research findings with university and college students, faculty members, practitioners and policy makers from across Canada and the world.
